The Top Five Culinary Herbs For Your Kitchen

Posted on 08 March 2010 by printable-coupons

There are numerous wonderful culinary herbs that it’s difficult to pick just five for our top five list, but here goes:

1. Basil. The scent of basil when gently rubbed between your fingers is strong and heavenly. If you love pasta this herb should be your top choice. It reminds us of long, lazy summer days and it is especially enjoyed with fresh garlic, crushed black pepper, large cuts of mozarella, thick slices of juicy beef tomatoes all drizzled with an oil and vinegar dressing. Basil is also the main ingredient in pesto. Basil not only complements Italian food but also American and Thai cuisines.

2. Lavender. Our favorite herb blend is Herbes De Provence and lavender helps make up this delightful mix, along with savory, thyme, basil and others. It’s perfect on grilled food, especially fish, and in vegetable soups and meaty stews too. Not only is lavender for eating, it helps us de-stress. Lavender helps relax the body, so a lavender filled sachet by your pillow will help you have a great night’s sleep!

3. Dill. Do I hear you say pickles? And let’s not forget salmon. It’s fine ‘branches’ dress up salmon wonderfully.

4. Rosemary. Think big when you think of Rosemary – it can really grow! This shrub that can be grown into mini culinary Christmas trees – a perfect gift for anyone who loves to cook. It smells heavenly too and it’s a perfect accompaniment for tomato based ishes and grilled vegetables, meat and soup.

5. Cilantro rounds out our top five. It has a very different aroma and certainly livens up a dish. It makes pico de gallo popand any other Mexican food!

With the great varieties of herbs available today it’s hard to choose just five top herbs. Growing herbs can be a lot of fun, so if you’ve ever fancied the idea of a herb garden then why not pick up these five herbs in the spring and get planting! You will then have a choice of herbs that will delight your palate that are within easy reach, for whatever type of dish you are cooking.

The preference for refrigerated organic baby foods is that they preserve nutrients a lot better together with the natural flavor of the ingredients. You'll Love These Kitchen Utensils Even Though You Don't Need Them

Posted on 02 January 2010 by printable-coupons

When we see a chef prepare a meal on T.V., the natural inclination is to want to replicate it. If it’s your desire to be a cooking ace in the kitchen, it helps to have the right utensils.  Every cook needs a base set of utensils to use to prepare his meals But, in addition to this base set, there are other particulars, that while not compulsory, make life a bit easier in the kitchen.

Basting brushes – just about every chef uses these brushes to baste fish, veggies, and other foods with fats, stock, wine, or other liquids. Basting brushes are not required kitchen tools because you can baste with a spoon – as many home cooks regularly do. A brush does, however, let you baste with the liquids in a more even fashion. In addition, a bush lets you “paint” the liquid into places that would be hard to reach with a spoon.

Vegetable brush – it’s always good to clean your vegetables. A lot of home cooks simply clean their produce by either rinsing them under water or by scraping off the skin and then rinsing them. But there are those cooks who are really into healthy eating. They want to use organic vegetables and they hate disposing of what they consider to be an essential part of the vegetable or fruit. In many vegetables, there are more nutrients in the skin than in the  other parts of the plant. Not only that, but the skin contains roughage which is good for the body. These cooks like to simply use a vegetable brush to clean the dirt off the skin, and include the whole vegetable in their meal.

Tongs – the really experienced cooks may consider tongs a luxury as they do just fine using forks and even their fingers. For the less experienced cook, however, they prevent burns. They also make it easier to remove those pieces of chicken and other foods from the fryer. They are an excellent replacement for the hands. When a piece of food has cooked on one side, instead of using your hands and fingers to turn the food, use your tongs instead.

You may feel that you need other premier tools as well. For example, maybe you think that you need the best stainless steel grills, or the most expensive good grade commercial stainless steel sinks, or state of the art barbecue gas grills. And often you don’t these things at all . But they sure make the cooking experience a lot more fun.

The Many Advantages of Drinking Fresh-Squeezed Juice

Posted on 29 December 2009 by printable-coupons

In the last few years, many people have started to know the health benefits that one may obtain as a result of juicing. At an inn or a nice restaurant, you might have sampled a mouth-watering, freshly squeezed orange juice and absolutely loved it. But if you have never sipped anything as exciting as a mango-papaya-carrot blend, then you still don’t comprehend what an invigorating juice really tastes like. A great model to consider is the Breville 800CPXL Die-Cast Stainless-Steel Motorized Citrus Press.

While you are savoring some delectable and full flavored juice, your body will also receive the correct amount of nutrition from fruits and vegetables you are drinking.  Juicing is a delicious and wholesome improvement over vitamins, because when you enjoy the foods that comprise your juice, you also ingest the fruit fiber and vegetable protein which you’ll find missing from vitamin pills.

Since there are a lot of well-made juicers available, you may enjoy the benefits of juicing at an affordable price while still in the convenience of your own kitchen. Juicers can be purchased for as little as two hundred dollars, and they might function as great gifts for your friends and relations.

Food intake is thought of by most doctors and practitioners as an especially vital factor in disease prevention. You could discover a lot of health conditions that are especially present in modernized areas, particularly in Europe and America, and have never been experienced in places where people’s meals were made primarily of vegetables and fruits. A nice model to look into is the Breville 800CPXL Citrus Press.

Researchers working in Africa for more than 30 years have not seen a solitary occurrence of prostate cancer, colon cancer or diverticulitis. Researchers assert that the only explanation for this is that African diets are mostly made up of vegetables, but the daily menu in today’s cities leans towards pre-packed foods stuffed with chemicals and preservatives.

Juice Your Way to Health

One more reason for juicing is the ways that the natural fibers in the juice aid our digestion and help our bodies to purge contaminants. Usually, packaging and cooking foods will destroy the sensitive micro-nutrients that exist only in fresh foods. So by expanding your natural vegetable and fruit intake, and enjoying all the natural pulps and fibers through juicing, you can help your body to work better. Eating healthy makes you more productive and decreases the opportunities for suffering from different kinds of illnesses.

A human body needs about one pound of vegetables for each 50 pounds of body weight. A common difficulty most folks run into when consuming uncooked fruits and vegetables is that the texture and taste can be unappetizing in large servings. Kids have never been particularly partial to consuming fruits and vegetables, so juicing is an expedient way for your little tykes to recieve the needed level of nutrition without any unattractive taste and texture. A great unit is the Breville 800CPXL Citrus Press.

On top of these health benefits, juicing can be an effective means of getting the essential micro-nutrients and minerals needed by the body to keep nutritionally balanced. One of the best systems for beginning a juicing routine is to consume the juice at the same time daily. You ought to also remember to enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables right away. Storing your drink will only lead to a decrease in nutritional value. Keep your fruits and vegetables properly so they are at ripe perfection when you juice them. Drink vegetable and fruit juices immediately, or they could just as easily be kept in a refrigerator an hour or less in advance of drinking it.

Choosing a Rachael Ray Set for Your Cutlery

Posted on 16 November 2009 by printable-coupons

In this modern civilization where practically every movie or television star is marketing his or her popularity through advertising endorsements, talk shows, books and videos and eponymous products, Rachael Ray is just as busy as everyone else. Luckily for the followers of her television personality, her eponymous merchandise is associated with her primary skill – cooking. Thus was born the Rachael Ray cutlery collections which coordinate with her cookware collection, such as the Furi Rachael Ray Gusto Grip 3 Piece Knife Set.

General Features

Rachael Ray’s cutlery is made by Füritechnics, an Australian knife manufacturer that also has endorsements from other celebrity chefs including Nigella Lawson. Under Ray’s guidance, these knives are lightweight and have slip-resistant handles (as Ray calls them, “super duper grippy”) and German steel blades. And predictably, with orange being her signature color, practiacally all the knives are sporting orange handles cases, with the notable exception of the black-handled steak knife set along with its case.

Addressing the technical issues, Rachel Ray’s cutlery sets are made from a high-carbon German stainless steel alloy blade with a polypropylene/synthetic rubber handle molded in a patented reversed-cone shape to increase its “super duper grippyness”. A pair of important attributes in the grips of Ray’s knives are the germ-killing ingredients in the material, and the copper insert that is able to be shaved to re-establish the knife’s balance after a couple of years of sharpening sessions.

Advantages

Well, as previously mentioned, the non-slip grip meets Ms. Ray’s goals, thanks to the grip’s reverse-wedge shape which provides super-grip management even when your hands are wet. You’ll have to agree, you don’t want to employ very sharp knives which could get quickly out of control after they are moistened by liquid on your hands, which happens  constantly while you are cooking. A great set is the Furi Rachael Ray Gusto Grip Knife Set.

Every Rachael Ray knife set could be a great gift as a result of its striking packaging. On top of that, you may pick either the orange or the black case or the bamboo case. And the orange handles are a sight for sore eyes in a dull beige kitchen!

Also, it doesn’t hurt that Rachael Ray touches viewer’s lives through her TV programs. She has personally worked with and tested every knife during her cooking show and they proved to be effective. That advertising, when coupled with Rachael’s charisma, encourages fans to buy the items. And that’s star power for you!

Disadvantages

Despite the fact that the Rachael Ray knife set provides cutting abilities, there are some issues about the knives themselves. For one thing, the orange handles might be a trick to pull off if your home is in a specific hue, or if you simply don’t like your kitchen gadgets to visually reach out and welcome your visitors. Unless you can put up with these very visible accents constantly, you are better off with neutral-colored handles like black or silver.

There are also problems about the risk for the E. coli bacteria settling in the yawning seam between the rubber handle and the metal bolster. This, naturally, proceeds from the lack of ease in rinsing between such small spaces. Well, it could be the anti-microbial components in the plastic can diminish it, although the risk may be too high for your peace of mind. A nice set to look into is the Furi Rachael Ray Gusto Grip 3 Piece Knife Set.

All things considered, a Rachael Ray knife set is ideal for beginning chefs developing their talents in the home. For people with heavy duty uses for knives, an upgrade to higher quality blades may be suggested.

Grilled Inddors Or Out, Fruits And Vegetables Are Yummy!

Posted on 12 October 2009 by printable-coupons

Being able to grill vegetables and fruits gives you a whole new set of dishes and tastes to try. This will give you some different side dishes than the same tired boiled vegetables.

Making vegetables and fruits enticing to eat is important. They are a vital part of our diet, and most people don’t eat near enough servings of these every day. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention):

“Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Compared with people who consume a diet with only small amounts of fruits and vegetables, those who eat more generous amounts as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of chronic diseases, including stroke and perhaps other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.”

In warmer months you can use an outdoors grill, and in cold weather you can use an indoor grill such as one of George Foreman’s Grills.

Different Ways Of Grilling Vegetables And Fruit

If you’re using the outdoor grill, you can put a bunch of vegetables in a foil packet, and place it on the grill with whatever meat you are also grilling. Of course, nothing says you can’t just grill the veggies by themselves!)

Kabobs work for both fruit and vegetables. Food should be in pieces that are big enough to be skewered without falling apart, but not so big the outside chars to a crisp before the inside is done.

Vegetables and fruit can be placed directly on the surface of a clean grill. Cook food whole, such as corn on the cob, or cut it into thick slices. Food must be in big enough slices or pieces to keep from falling through the spaces if using an outside grill. There are advantages with an indoor grill, since you don’t have to worry about losing the food, and it can be grilled on both sides at once.

Keep close to the cooking fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind fruits and vegetables cook much faster than meats, so don’t forget them and let them char to a crisp.

More Flavor If Desired, Fat Is Required

To keep the fruit or vegetables from sticking, brush them with oil, butter or something like salad dressing.

To make a different flavor, try marinating the food before cooking it. Marinate the food about 30 minutes, though the flavor becomes more intense the longer the food is marinated.

Brushing a different flavored oil on the food’s surface gives it a different flavor. A mixture of herbs will accomplish the same thing. To add both fat and flavor brush salad dressings on the surface of the food. An Italian salad dressing works well on vegetables, and poppyseed is a nice flavor addition to fruit.

What To Grill

You can grill just about any fruit or vegetable, but some hold up better than others. Cucumbers and watermelon, or other fruits and vegetables with a high water content, don’t grill quite as well. However, they can be grilled easier on an indoor grill. Prevent a messy countertop, however, by making sure to have the grill’s drip container in place!

Let your imagination run wild, however, since most vegetables and fruits can be grilled. Get creative and try some different combinations. For instance, pineapple, peaches or a mango all grill well. Eggplant is a standard on grills, and green peppers are especially yummy.

Here’s A Recipe To Start Your Grilling

To get you started with grilling fruits and vegetables, here’s a recipe.

Grilled Fruit And Vegetable Kabobs

Ingredients:

  • Mushrooms
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Pearl Onions
  • Large Olives

Alternate the different types of fruit and vegetables on skewers.

Brush the fruit and veggies with barbeque sauce.

Put the skewered food on the grill (indoors or outdoors).

After the food has browned, turn the kabob and cook longer, continuing until all sides are browned.

Take Note: You can use any combination of fruits and vegetables. Just adjust the ingredients to suit your tastes.

Have fun grilling those tasty fruits and vegetables both inside grills and outside grills, thus adding great food to your menu!

Looking to Use a Reliable Food Sealer?

Posted on 12 October 2009 by printable-coupons

Everyone has their own methods of food storage, and many own a vacuum sealer to assist with protecting their foods. However, not all vacuum sealers function identically. There are many kinds of different vacuum sealers on the market and the best vacuum sealer for your purposes will be different from that of another person’s ideal food saver vacuum sealer.

The size of the products that you plan to be sealing should affect your decision. There are various types of vacuum sealers that are made for specific sizes of bags. Some vacuum sealers will work specifically for smaller bags but are limited to a 3×6 inch bag. Other kinds of sealers can be more adaptable in the different sizes of bags they can work with. It helps for you to take into account what sorts of foods you will be storing, and in what portion sizes, to determine if you should get a sealer that can seal half a hog or if you should settle for a vacuum sealer that is made for smaller jobs.

The operation format is also important. If you are comfortable working around kitchen equipment, then you should appreciate the superior performance of a manually operated sealer. For people who are not as experienced, it is best to choose a vacuum sealer that works automatically and is hands free. Certain sealers can even automatically determine the best heat setting for each job so that you will get the best food protection results.

Some food saver vacuum sealers will be heavier in weight. The sealers that are especially heavy include the forty pound vacuum sealers that are used by commercial kitchens. If you need a vacuum sealer for personal use then you may want to look for a machine which is more portable and enables you to move the appliance to where you want it.

Certain sealers offer storage options for the bags in between uses. If you are more comfortable with these machines then you should look into using a sealer that employs cellophane rolls to help with storing foods. If not, then you should consider a sealer made to accommodate individual bags that can be filled and sealed one at a time. Of course, if you use a single bag sealer, then you should look to get a method of storing the bags alongside the sealer.

You have lots of issues to be aware of when looking to find the proper food saver vacuum sealer for your food protection needs. The operation format, size of the products you are storing and the size of the vacuum sealer are all variables to decide upon. It also is useful to look into the sealing equipment that go with the sealer you are considering.

How to Extract Maple Syrup for Eating in Your Kitchen

Posted on 29 August 2009 by printable-coupons

If you wish to make maple syrup at home, the first thing you must accomplish is to collect some fresh sap from a maple tree. You can achieve this by locating at least one maple tree. Sugar Maple is the type of maple tree with the highest amount of sugar. Nevertheless, the other types such as Ash-leafed Maple, Silver Maple and Red Maple can also be used, although you will not be getting sap as sweet as that of the Sugar Maple tree. The Sugar Maple is the best to use for making maple sugar candy or maple syrup recipe. Furthermore, you need to be certain that the trees you pick have at least a diameter of ten inches and a height of four and a half feet.

Next, use a drill to make a hole in the tree’s trunk. A depth of two to thee inches and a diameter of 7/16 inch must be the dimensions of this hole. Clean the hole if there are any loose wood present. After doing so, tap a spout lightly into the hole using a hammer. A spout is available in hardware shops, feed stores and farm supply stores.

Get a clean bucket and hang it onto the spout to catch the maple sap as it drips out. This bucket must be rust-proof. It is also advisable to use a container with a lid because this prevents insects, rainwater, wood shavings and bits of bark from falling into the sap.

Once you have collected enough sap, put it in containers and have it refrigerated until you are prepared to proceed to the boiling process and turn it into syrup. Note that if you want to make a lot of maple syrup, you also need to collect more than a lot of sap. This is because only one gallon of maple syrup can be made from 40 gallons of sap!

You need to boil the sap fresh from a maple tree because it contains only about two percent of sugar while the rest is water content. Therefore, in order for much water to evaporate, you need to boil it. Use a pot or pan that is made of stainless steel for boiling. It is better to boil the sap outdoors because there will surely be intense steam.

The sap with better quality is the sap that boils faster. When the sap first begins to boil, determine its temperature and take note of it. Later on, you will need again this initial temperature. Once the sap begins to thicken, go back indoors and finish the boiling process there, controlling the heat. Take the temperature of the sap occasionally. When the temperature measured is higher than its initial temperature by at least seven degrees Fahrenheit, then it is ready.

Once the syrup is ready, use a food-approved filter, strainer, or clean cheesecloth and strain the syrup so that any trace of debris and crystallized sugars can be removed. And there you have it; you have created homemade maple syrup! You can even make different organic grade b maple syrup.

Information You Need to Know About Maple Syrup and Maple Trees

Posted on 29 August 2009 by printable-coupons

Maple is one of the most useful trees species in the world and is the source of the all-favorite maple syrup, which we eat with pancakes, waffles, and French toast. The syrup is also a popular aide in baking, candy-production, and making desserts. One of my favorites is maple sugar candy. Sometimes, it is also used for giving beer a special flavor. But aside from maple syrup, the maple tree also produces a long list of other products.

Maple is characterized by its pointed leaves as could be seen in the emblem on Canada’s national flag. Where the maple tree grows is part of how we classify the type of maple syrup like Canadian maple syrup. If you are interested in maple syrup supplies then there are many different areas you could do research. About 125 different species of maple, growing from ten up to 45 meters tall, exist around the world. Maples produce wood and timber, which is used for furniture, musical instruments, baseball bats, bowling pins, and many others. Maples also contribute to agriculture as they produce pollen that help the successful cultivation of honeybees.

Maple syrup is a staple in the dining table especially in the United States and Canada, which produces over 80% of the world’s supply. The discovery of the technology to turn sap from the maple tree into maple syrup is attributed to the Native Americans. European settlers eventually took on the tradition of maple syrup production. Sap coming from the black maple and the sugar maple have comparatively high sugar content, which is why they are the ones that are usually tapped for maple syrup.

Other Maple Products

Maple sugar. Maple is also a good sugar source. Maple sugar, twice as sweet as granulated sugar, is made from the residue after the sap of sugar maple is boiled for a longer time required than in making maple syrup or maple taffy. The solid residue is pressed and turned into compact translucent sugar cubes.Granulated maple sugar is now also available in the market.

Maple taffy. Maple taffy is created by boiling the maple sap longer than needed to make maple syrup but not as long as required to make maple sugar or maple butter. The boiled sap is then poured out onto snow to create the taffy, which is rolled around popsicle sticks. The confection makes up a small part of Quebec and New England traditions. Today, maple candy pops, toffee, and hard candy are favorite children’s confections.

Maple butter. Maple butter is not a dairy product as its name indicates but it is used as a spread and frosting. It has the smoothness and the creaminess of peanut butter. Sometimes, maple butter is known as maple cream or maple spread.

Maple coffee and maple tea. These are popular maple products in Canada and some other countries although they are not made purely of maple. Maple sap essence is skillfully used to enhance the flavors of either coffee or tea.

Ornamentally, maple trees have many benefits for tourism and agriculture. Leaf watching traditions, bonsai, photography, and horticulture center around the physical attractiveness of maples.

The Important Benefits of Maple Syrup and Derivative Maple Products

Posted on 29 August 2009 by printable-coupons

Many love maple syrup because it has a unique sweet taste making it perfect for many pastry foods including pancakes and waffles. Nonetheless, aside from its sweet tase, maple syrup is good because promotes the health of our body. Maple syrup is, firstly, a purely organic substance. It is made by boiling sap fresh from maple trees until it fully thickens into syrup. There are certainly no added preservatives! It has also a lower amount of calories compared to sugarcane but is 3 times sweeter! Thus, it can be used as a sweetener and is perfect for individuals with diabetes. It can be used as your pastry or coffee sweetener rather than honey or white sugar. In the US, maple syrup grades are classified that way based on their color and flavor. No matter if you choose Canadian maple syrup or some other variety, you will be healthier for it. The health benefits of maple syrup are numerous.

Maple syrup also contains manganese, which is very essential for antioxidant defenses and in the production of energy. This is because the so-called “powerhouses” of our body, mitochondria, require manganese for it to be able to produce energy. The enzyme superoxide dismutase that functions in oxidation by disarming free radicals also needs manganese to function properly. The daily consumption requirement for manganese is 22% and this can be given already by just one ounce of maple syrup.

Aside from this, maple syrup is also good for the heart because it contains zinc. Aside from antioxidant purposes, zinc also helps in considerably decreasing the progression of the heart condition atherosclerosis. It is also needed by the cells in the heart’s endothelium for proper functioning. It has been proven that cells in the endothelium that are low in zinc are more prone to injury.

Furthermore, the doy’s immune system needs these two minerals, zinc and manganese, contained in maple syrup to perform its function correctly. Many immune system cells depend on zinc to properly function optimally, specifically in children. It has been shown in studies that a deficiency in zinc also causes a decrease in the number of white blood cells and the ability of the immune system to respond properly. Moreover, manganese is important for healing since it decreases the swelling of sores and wounds. It also acts as a stimulant of the immune system.

Maple syrup is also very beneficial to reproductive health, especially that of men. This is because the prostate is where zinc is more highly concentrated than in any other tissue in the body. It was also discovered from studies that low levels of zinc in the prostate gland is associated with greater risks of developing prostatitis and prostate cancer. As a matter of fact, many health care professionals use zinc as a therapeutic remedy that helps reduce the size of the prostate. On the other hand, reproductive health also benefits from manganese because is participates in the production of hormones that stimulate sexual drive.
